Local SEO keywords: a long-tail strategy for local businesses
"Near me" searches and city-plus-service phrases are pure revenue for local businesses. Here's how to find and win the local long-tail keywords.

For local businesses, the highest-value searches on earth are short phrases with a place attached: "dentist south austin", "emergency plumber near me", "best vegan bakery in denver". These long-tail local keywords are low competition and close to purchase.
Map the local keyword combinations
Local long-tail keywords are built from three slots: the service, the audience or problem, and the geography. Fill each layer and combine.
- •Service + place: "roof repair seattle"
- •Service + neighborhood: "electrician cap hill"
- •Service + audience: "dog groomer for anxious dogs"
- •Service + problem + place: "24 hour locksmith northwest austin"
Mine geo terms from everywhere
Feed each service into the long-tail keyword generator, then layer in the places your customers actually say: neighborhoods, landmarks, schools, workplaces, districts. Add "open now", "near me", "same day", and "emergency" modifiers — they flag real urgency.
One service area, one page
Never lump six neighborhoods onto one page. Give each service-and-area combination its own page with unique content: local tips, projects, photos, and prices. The exact pages that look like overkill are the ones that capture the local searches competitors ignore.
