How to update old content and double its keyword traffic

The cheapest traffic you'll ever earn is already ranking. Here's a process for refreshing stale pages so they climb again for their long-tail keywords.

Your oldest pages probably hold your strongest keywords — and they're slowly losing them to newer, fresher content. Updating a page that already ranks is the highest-return SEO task there is, because you're working with momentum instead of against it.

Find the pages worth refreshing

Open your search console and sort by clicks, then look for the three signs of a stale page: impressions are steady but clicks are sliding, rankings sit at positions four to ten, or the page ranks but converts nothing. Each of these is a refresh candidate, not a rewrite.

Refresh against a fresh keyword list

Re-run the page's seed topic through the long-tail keyword generator. Add new long-tail questions as sections, fold new comparisons into existing ones, and swap any year-specific data. The goal is a page that is strictly better at answering the same queries.

Do the three most powerful updates

Then re-submit the URL in search console and add one new internal link from a recent post. Within a few weeks, most refreshed pages recover or beat their old positions.

  • •Rewrite the title and H1 to match today's top query for that page
  • •Add 200-500 words that cover a question the current top rivals miss
  • •Update the publish date, prune dead links, and improve one media element
