A seasonal keyword strategy: ride the spikes without losing year-round traffic

Holidays, back-to-school, and tax season spike for a few weeks a year. Here's how to plan seasonal long-tail keywords without starving your evergreen pages.

Seasonal keywords are the most volatile opportunity in SEO: a term can be empty for ten months and explode for six weeks. Done right, seasonal long-tails give you bonus traffic spikes. Done wrong, they take budget from the pages that feed you year-round.

Separate evergreen from seasonal

Split your keyword list into two piles. Evergreen terms — "how to email marketing" — deserve permanent pages and stable links. Seasonal terms — "christmas marketing ideas", "black friday email templates" — deserve dedicated pages with publish-on and refresh-on dates attached.

  • •Evergreen: publish anytime, optimize once, keep forever
  • •Seasonal: plan months ahead, deploy early, retire or recycle after

Plan the calendar backwards from the spike

Search interest for a holiday typically starts climbing five to eight weeks before the event. Publish before the climb, because rankings take weeks to establish. Build a calendar by feed each seasonal topic into the long-tail generator and tagging the output by month.

Recycle pages instead of republishing

A page that ranked last season is a ranked page. Update the date, refresh the examples and prices, and re-crawl it instead of starting from zero. Keep your evergreen links pointing at the evergreen page — seasonal surges should spike and fade, not drag the rest down.
